Geeks of the World Unite!

How I am putting my Geeky skill set to use

First thing first:

I need a way to keep my laptop, phone, iPad, camera, etc, etc, charged - I got my nifty Yeti 150 (on sale this weekend on REI - no, they are not paying me any money to advertise)

Then:

Wouldn't it be nice if I had a dash cam so I can record the endless hours of driving...

Maybe I can borrow a Go-Pro from a friend! Never got an answer...

I do not want to buy a go-pro or dash cam! I am being thrifty... oh wait a minute, I have an old phone! There is got to be a way to do this....

I Googled "how to re purpose old cell phone as dash cam" - I found many articles but I like HTG (How To Geek) - so I follow their advice.  You can read ALL About it by following the link.

I suggest you delete ALL apps, so you have a bare bones phone.  This will help with battery and memory. Delete ALL data and personal information, if you loose it, your personal information will not go with it.  You don't want to have to be constantly deleting items to make room for tomorrow's drive so if you have an android phone, just buy a whole bunch of memory cards and have them handy.

Do yourself a favor an invest in a good window mount, you don't want to be having to fiddle with it all the time.  Set it and forget it.

I downloaded both apps and I find I like AutoBoy BlackBox better.

Then as I was sitting in my car playing around with the cam app, I realized not only do I get a dash cam I am getting my own TV Studio! how cool is that! Now I see how those YouTubers do it!

Wouldn't it be nice if I can edit the videos so I don't show endless hours of road... and just share the nice, interesting stuff? aha! another Google search... Enter  Filmora Go - from WonderShare!  It is FREE! and there is a phone app and a desktop app! And it is FREE.

It is beautifully designed and easy to use.  Very intuitive and user friendly - you can use your phone or your laptop and did I mention it is free.

So, tada! Here are the two test clips I made...

I am using an android phone, so I am sticking to the Google platform for the rest of the tools. Back up of photos, videos and files.  I also re-discovered my G+ and Blogger accounts to share information.

I have Google Maps and My Google Maps - I also have paper copies and AAA Trip Tick Because those don't required chargers or data services.

I downloaded the following apps:

  1. MyMaps (Google) - with my personalized maps
  2. Free Campsites - take a guess?
  3. Overnight Parking Finder - second guess
  4. REI National Parks - very nice guides, beautiful pictures
  5. Roadtrippers - I like this app much better than AAA for the maps and trip tips.
  6. AAA - So I can be located easier (if I have phone service)
  7. Costco - don't laugh, they have gas in many locations, clean bathrooms and good hot-dogs!

I have a link on my phone home page to:

  1. Maps of the Bureau of Land Management
  2. US National Park

This list may increase as the trip happens... I also know these blog posts will become smaller as the days tick by :) i'll be too busy living!

My friend Dayna is thinking about living out of a van and she said she would get a membership to Gold's Gym and then use the showers there. (:

Any Time Fitness or Plabet Fitness may be a bit more affordable than Gold's gym

Virginia Beach- Being a tourist in your own backyard

Visiting my own back yard! I am also going to try to visit Shenandoah to complete the loop. Visited a friend in Virginia Beach and she was kind to drive me around and making sure I visited Mount Trashmore to complete my experience.

Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota! Another "never been here" before state. After NY I headed to Ohio.  A friend from my group fo motorcycle driver awesome women friend found me a safe spot to park in Cleveland.  I spent some time in lake Erie -  took a nice little walk and then I headed to Illinois. OHH yes - I found Historic Rt 20!!  I kept on it all th way through Michigan but it is taking way too long so I am going to cheat and jump on the highways from here to Yellowstone . . A friend from church procured for me a safe spot to park overnight in Chicago!! It was raining and I felt like I would need a kayak before the night was over. Now have an uncle Jim! :) While driving through Wisconsin I stumbled into the "Cheese box" .... Bought some cheese to bring to my host's but half it was "gone" by the time I made it into Minnesota. It evaporated ... that ...

Small Steps.. Moving Forward... Relentlessly Reaching Out for your Goals

Every day I try to take little steps towards prepping me for the road trip. Small completed tasks become completed projects. The belongings are packed and in storage bins.  I am happy to report that most of the clutter was donated, re gifted, etc.  There will be more decluttering when I come back in January. The more "stuff" I hold on to, the more anchored I feel.  Less stuff less worry! On the prepping front, I have now invested in "Reflectix" material to create heat reflectors for the car windows and privacy during nap times. I used liquid fabric glue and fabric from the $ Store and created these!! My home economics teacher must be spinning in her grave - I didn't use any measuring tools or templates... just eyeballs and a sharpy. In the food supply area, I am going to "try" on keeping it "low carb".  I found out that Costco has a sale on "premier protein" shakes - so I am hoardi...

Looking for Dory at Monterey Bay

Always wanted to go to Monterey Bay - then I saw Finding Dory and I wanted it even more!!  But once I made it to the aquarium and found out it was $50.00 US!! I sort of had a change of heart and learned how to live with disappointment and 50bucks still in my wallet ;) Here are some images from Monterey Bay and some sunset ones at Carmel by the Sea:

No hot Coffee? Le Gasp!

No Hot Coffee? Le Gasp!  It was with a bit of a shock that I realized the other day: no 7-11 at the woods... From MD Renaissance Fair Vendor - 2010 So I checked in with a group of wonderful women in Facebook and I asked their advice and turns out I am not the only one who has confronted this obstacle.  Fortunately I can count with a brain trust just a couple of keystrokes away! There were many suggestions, for example get cold brews (already made) or get cold brews instant coffee.  Really good ideas for when I am in my South West Leg.  However, for the Western Expansion leg (Maine to Oregon) - I am going to be driving right at the beginning of the winter season and for what I have read, I am going to need warm yummy coffee in my tummy early in the morning.  Hot Chocolate in the evening and maybe even some apple cider. So following their advice, I decided to get a butane stove.  I had to google what butane is.  I was THAT clueless... but ...
