The Desert Landscape of Utah

After leaving Yellowstone I drove down to Jackson Hole and from there I headed to Idaho on my way to Utah and the Arches National Park.

I had to drive over one of the Grand Teton - unfortunately I lost ALL my Yellowstone and Grand Teton footage due to XD card corruption.  I am hoping that once I return to VA I can figure out a way to rescue those vids because the footage was beautiful  : (  I stopped at a Costco in Utah and bought me a new XD card - so I can continue using my phone as a dash camera...

From the "things I'm learning" list:

  1. When looking for a hotel stay at least 30 - 40 minutes away from the main attraction.  For example, when I wanted to be near Yellowstone the cheapest hotel in Gardiner Montana was around 180+ taxes. In Livingston, Montana  59.00 + taxes.  Same here in Utah - In Moab the cheapest hotel was 159 + taxes.  In Price, Utah 55.00 + taxes (and they have a hot tub).

  2. Never miss the chance to take advantage of a bathroom break.

  3. Gas up! Whenever you see a gas station - you never know when the next one will be available. Gas Body app is your friend.

  4. Check the tolls ahead of time - most of the toll roads do not have cashiers and you may end up paying a hefty over charge if you don't have the right equipment.  Better yet, try to avoid toll roads when possible.  Toll Guru is your other best friend.
  5. Back up, back up, back up your files! or you may loose priceless data! :(

Virginia Beach- Being a tourist in your own backyard

Visiting my own back yard! I am also going to try to visit Shenandoah to complete the loop. Visited a friend in Virginia Beach and she was kind to drive me around and making sure I visited Mount Trashmore to complete my experience.

Looking for Dory at Monterey Bay

Always wanted to go to Monterey Bay - then I saw Finding Dory and I wanted it even more!!  But once I made it to the aquarium and found out it was $50.00 US!! I sort of had a change of heart and learned how to live with disappointment and 50bucks still in my wallet ;) Here are some images from Monterey Bay and some sunset ones at Carmel by the Sea:

Small Steps.. Moving Forward... Relentlessly Reaching Out for your Goals

Every day I try to take little steps towards prepping me for the road trip. Small completed tasks become completed projects. The belongings are packed and in storage bins.  I am happy to report that most of the clutter was donated, re gifted, etc.  There will be more decluttering when I come back in January. The more "stuff" I hold on to, the more anchored I feel.  Less stuff less worry! On the prepping front, I have now invested in "Reflectix" material to create heat reflectors for the car windows and privacy during nap times. I used liquid fabric glue and fabric from the $ Store and created these!! My home economics teacher must be spinning in her grave - I didn't use any measuring tools or templates... just eyeballs and a sharpy. In the food supply area, I am going to "try" on keeping it "low carb".  I found out that Costco has a sale on "premier protein" shakes - so I am hoardi...

"Best ... bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine - or Portland, Oregon...” -Jack Torrance

My own westward expansion is accomplished! Portland to Portland! All 4000K miles of the journey! DONE! "… You were always the best of 'em. Best ... bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine - or Portland, Oregon for that matter.” -Jack Torrance, in The Shining.  T he exterior of the 'Overlook Hotel' is the  Timberline Lodge ,  Mount Hood  in the Hood River area of Northern Oregon. One of my "Wander List" Items that I am proud to check off is coming to Portland Oregon. The idea of all those explorers making it “out west” and crossing the vastness of the continent to “see what is out there” has always been appealing. Perhaps because I am the child of immigrants.   I am an immigrant.   The image of all those people taking the chance and picking up all that they could to make it “all the way” to Portland… Leaving everything behind and carving a life in a new place.   I identify with all of that… the sense of adventure, the search for something...

No hot Coffee? Le Gasp!

No Hot Coffee? Le Gasp!  It was with a bit of a shock that I realized the other day: no 7-11 at the woods... From MD Renaissance Fair Vendor - 2010 So I checked in with a group of wonderful women in Facebook and I asked their advice and turns out I am not the only one who has confronted this obstacle.  Fortunately I can count with a brain trust just a couple of keystrokes away! There were many suggestions, for example get cold brews (already made) or get cold brews instant coffee.  Really good ideas for when I am in my South West Leg.  However, for the Western Expansion leg (Maine to Oregon) - I am going to be driving right at the beginning of the winter season and for what I have read, I am going to need warm yummy coffee in my tummy early in the morning.  Hot Chocolate in the evening and maybe even some apple cider. So following their advice, I decided to get a butane stove.  I had to google what butane is.  I was THAT clueless... but ...
